Energy debt

Fatigue and lack of energy are topics that surround us. Exhaustion and overwhelm have become new standards. Energy is our fuel, it is the source that drives us, which we need every day.

Our reserves are not inexhaustible. Some of us are only slightly tired, while others may be on the verge of burnout. One thing is certain, each of us can have more energy than we currently have at this moment.

Owerwhelmed

Personal and professional growth, success, and a sense of satisfaction require working with energy. This can be metaphorically likened to a credit card. Each of us has some "net worth," that is, energy that we truly possess. If we are in positive numbers, everything is fine. However, if we are operating in negative values, it is necessary to start repaying.

The main cause of energy debt is that we consistently draw more than we "earn." At the same time, similar to finances, interest accumulates on the outstanding amount.

The good news is that there is always something that can be done about debt.

We can use three approaches to work with energy:

  1. Earn more: Focus on maximizing the influx of new energy.

  2. Reduce expenses: Cut down on activities that drain our energy.

  3. Combine both: As the fastest and most effective path.

What will you need?

  • Don't rely on recommendations from those around you. Most likely, they also lack energy, and their advice may not be very helpful.

  • Be open to making changes in your life, whatever they may be.

  • Be patient. Just like with real financial debts, paying off the owed amount with interest is a long-term process that requires patience and discipline.

#1 - Energy audit

The first step is always the precise identification of what drains your energy and what gives it to you. After a deeper examination, most people may realize that they may not know this at all. This point is not as easy as it may seem at first glance and, on its own, requires a lot of energy.

It's possible that the right answer might not initially be appealing to you due to your habits or beliefs. Similarly, a tired mother of two initially believed that being a good mother meant always perceiving everything with children and family positively. However, after deeper exploration, she discovered that she needed time just for herself.

If you're unsure how to navigate this phase, turn to your coach for guidance.

#2 - Write down your "incomes and expenses"

You may discover that you engage in an activity that brings you energy only once a week. That's okay; prioritize it. Adjust your schedule to incorporate this activity (or inactivity) as frequently as possible in your week. Conversely, minimize expenses wherever possible.

From experience, I recommend firmly marking your "energy window" in your calendar. If you don't do this, there's a risk that instead, you might plan some "expenditure," and the energy debt could deepen.

#3 - Be patient

At this moment, you are starting to repay slowly. Here's one important note – the repayment goes painfully slowly. Initially, you must settle the accumulated interest before starting to repay the principal. Life balance and harmony require patience.

#4 - Nothing is happening

Initially, you may feel like you're finally doing things better, but that you still don't feel any better at all. That's normal because you are still in the red. Unfortunately, it may take a longer time for this to begin changing. Even though it can be very frustrating, hang in there; I'm sure it will pay off for you.

#5 - Create savings

When you finally pay off your entire debt, including interest, it's very tempting to want to treat yourself a little and reward yourself for a job well done. Finally, you have some energy, and you want to use it right away on a new project. But remember, you are still in debt. First, create at least small "savings," and only then start spending from them slowly.

Final recommendation

Be very patient with yourself. The duration of this process is individual; it can take not only weeks but also months. Often, we try to embark on this journey for years, constantly postpone it, or get lost along the way. A life coach is here to gently guide you through it.
