Between psychotherapy and coaching, both common elements and differences can be found, and the boundaries between them are often unclear. The target audience and techniques used may be similar. There are many definitions of both approaches, and each professional has their own.

However, the common goal is undoubtedly positive change, a better and more satisfying life
Here you will find my perspective based on experience
Therapeutic Path
Therapy generally tends to delve into the past and explore experiences and emotions in depth, seeking causes and connections to what we are currently experiencing. It is often conducted in a more open manner, emphasizing storytelling, experiencing, and learning from one's experiences. Therapy can diagnose and treat mental problems, helping individuals come to terms with the past and accept it. It provides support in life crises or deeper mental issues. A therapist may offer their professional insights or ideas and collaborate on the outcome of the healing process.
Coaching Path
In contrast, coaching is a structured process focused on a goal set in the future. You determine the goal yourself, and the coach accompanies you on your journey. Even if you don't have a specific goal in mind, a coach can help you effectively—using various techniques focused on self-discovery, awareness of your values, strengths, and more. How and when you achieve your desired goal is entirely up to you; the coach assists you in setting action steps, managing expectations, choosing time milestones, and taking steps forward.
The coach asks you questions, and you seek your own way to "answer." The coach does not evaluate or give advice but can hold up a mirror, motivate you, and oversee your progress.
Comparison of both approaches
THERAPY | COACHING |
It solves the present with the help of insight into the past | It solves the present and looks for solutions for the future |
It looks deep into the soul and emotions, self-acceptance | It focuses on the goal, looks for tailor-made solutions, considers obstacles, takes reality and dreams into account |
It deals with life crises, coming to terms with the past, hers by accepting, or treats trauma, diagnoses | Suitable for those who WANT a change in their life and have the will to make it happen, it takes commitment |
Common themes can be grief, depression, and deeper mental problems | It is a conscious path to a positive change in habits and thinking, fulfilling wishes, settling thoughts |
The goal does not exist, the therapy is not clearly defined "end" | The responsibility for implementation and achieving the goal rests solely on you |
Topics can be revealed gradually | You set the theme or goal yourself |
The healing process is more free, usually uses telling and experiencing | The coaching process is structured, results-oriented, focused on planning, decision-making, and implementation |
What is your path?
It is up to each professional to evaluate the situation and needs of their clients and offer a suitable alternative at the right time. It may happen that a client needs to address their past first before pursuing their dreams. Alternatively, during coaching, a client might stumble upon a topic that holds them back, prompting them to pause and take a step back.
However, if you aspire to move forward, coaching offers that opportunity. It is practically oriented and seeks solutions to achieve goals. Coaching is the path to your future.
